Senior Housing and Care Options

Assisted Living: housing and personalized support services designed to meet the needs of those they assist with activities of daily living. Services provided in Assisted Living residences usually include:meals in a community dining room, huousekeeping and laundry services, transportation, assistance with eating, bathing, toileting, walking, access to health services, 24 hour staffing, emergency call system, activities programs, and medication management.

Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC): offers several levels of assistance, including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s care and nursing home care. Usually, a long–term contract is made between the resident and the facility, often to last for the resident’s lifetime. The facility then provides a continuum of housing and care on one site.

Home Health Care: Medical and Nursing services are provided in an individual’s home by a licensed provider.

Hospice Care: Mostly provided in-home, although some specialized hospices and hospitals do provide this service. Hospice Care is geared towards providing comfort at the end of life rather than taking heroic lifesaving measures. It can include medical, and social services as well as counseling.

Independent Living: a residential setting for seniors who require minimal or no assistance. These communities may or may not provide supportive services. Independent living includes apartments or cottages where residents choose whether to participate in all services provided by the facility.

Life Care Community: A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) that offers an insurance type contract and provides all levels of care. Often this includes payment for acute care and physician's visits. Very little change is made in the monthly fee, except for increase in cost of living, despite what level of medical care the resident needs.

Nursing Home: 24-hour skilled care for more acute patients, requiring assistance for most or all daily living activities (such as bathing, dressing and toileting). One step below hospital acute care. Medical supervision and rehabilitation therapy are available. Nursing homes are state licensed and are eligible to participate in the Medicaid program. Also referred to as a Nursing Facility or Convalescent Home.

Senior Apartment: Age-restricted multiunit housing for older adults who are independent and care for themselves. Usually no additional services are provided. Similar to Independent Living.
