Awake During Hours of Sleep

How can you respond to someone who is unable to sleep during the night?

Assess what went on in the life of the person that day (or even week or month).

* Was the person involved in the activities of the day?  Were they activities the person enjoys?  Was there a lack of meaningful activity?

* Did the person need more interaction or companionship?  Should the person be involved in more one-on-one activities?

* Does the person sleep too much during the day?

* Is the person looking for someone or something?

* Does the person need to use the restroom?

* Does the person recognize their surroundings?

* Is the person hungry?

A good way to respond to this behavior:

·        Address the person by their name.

·        Maintain eye contact when communicating.

·        Present one question at a time.

·        Ask simple questions- “Do you want a sandwich?”

·        Use pictures or a visual representation of what you are talking about (show them the sandwich).Use touch, as appropriate.
